The Chronicle of Malays Humour

Here I want to share a story with u guys.

During the fasting month, a group of Pak Pandir’s friends from a neighbouring village came to Pak Pandir’s village to trade. After they had completed their business, they want to drop in on Pak Pandir. “Dear Pak Pandir, since we were in the village, we thought we would pay you a visit. As a token of our esteem, please accept this chicken.” Pak Pandir warmly greeted his guests and, as is Malay customs, invited the guests to stay for dinner. “I will serve them the chicken they presented me with,” thought Pak Pandir. His wife cooked the chicken and everyone ate to their heart content.

A few days later, a group of strangers knocked on Pak Pandir’s door. When he opened the door, he did not recognize them and asked that they introduced themselves. “Pak Pandir, we are the ralatives of the people who presented the chicken to you the other day,” they answered. “We were passing through on our way to the south and thought we would pay you a visit.” On hearing this, Pak Pandir and his wife welcomed them into their home and invited them to stay for dinner. This time chicken soup was served. “It is the broth of the chicken we had the other day,” explained Pak Pandir. The group ate to their hearts content and bade Pak Pandir and his wife farewell.

Another couple of days passed and yet another group of strangers knocked on Pak Pandir’s door. “We are from the village adjacent to the village of the people who presented you with a chicken,” they said. Once again Pak Pandir and his wife invited them in and asked them to stay for dinner. At dinner time, Pak Pandir brought a large pot filled to the brim with well water and placed it on the table. “What is the meaning of this?” protested the guest with a hint of displeasure. “You are very fortunate,” began Pak Pandir. “This is the broth of the broth of the chicken.”
